Quick answer

To become a data center technician, learn computer hardware and networking basics and prove them with a certificate such as CompTIA A+ (then Network+ or Server+), get hands-on work with servers, cabling or electrical equipment through IT help desk, the military, a trade or a training program such as Microsoft's Datacenter Academy, and apply with a one-page resume that leads with your certifications and hardware work.

## What a data center technician does

A data center technician keeps the servers, network gear and cabling in a data center running. CompTIA describes the work as monitoring the health and performance of servers, installing and updating server components based on diagnostic reports, and responding quickly to network and server issues. Day to day that means rack and stack (installing equipment in racks), replacing failed drives, memory and power supplies, running and testing copper and fiber cable, walking the halls to check power and cooling, and logging every change in a ticketing system.

Data centers run 24/7, so most technician jobs are shift work: nights, weekends and rotating 12-hour shifts are common. The employers are the big cloud companies (Amazon Web Services, Microsoft, Google, Meta), colocation operators such as Equinix, Digital Realty and QTS, and the contractors who build and maintain the sites. US searches for data center jobs have risen more than tenfold since 2021 (Google Trends), with hiring centered on Northern Virginia, Texas, Georgia, Ohio and Arizona.

## How to become a data center technician in five steps

1. Learn the basics: computer hardware, networking (IP addresses, switches, cabling), basic Linux and safe work around electrical equipment.
2. Earn a first certificate. CompTIA A+ is the usual start; CompTIA recommends A+ and Server+ for this role, and Network+ is widely asked for.
3. Get hands-on time with real equipment: an IT help desk or computer repair job, military communications work, an electrical, HVAC or cabling job, or a training program run with a data center operator.
4. Write a one-page resume that puts certifications and a hardware skills block first and describes the hands-on part of every job.
5. Apply to technician, data center operations technician and critical facilities technician roles, and say you can work rotating shifts.

## Data center technician certifications

| Certificate | What it shows | Best for |
| ----------------- | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- | ----------------------------------------------------- |
| CompTIA A+ | PC and server hardware, troubleshooting, basic networking and operating systems | Your first certificate, with or without IT experience |
| CompTIA Network+ | Networking: cabling, switching, IP addressing, troubleshooting | Technicians who will cable and patch network gear |
| CompTIA Server+ | Server hardware, storage, installation and maintenance | Moving from help desk to server work |
| BICSI Installer 1 | Structured cabling installed to standard | Cabling-heavy roles and installers |
| OSHA 10 | Basic workplace safety training | Any role on a data center floor or construction site |

## How to become a data center technician with no experience

With no data center job yet, show the same skills from somewhere else. IT help desk and computer repair jobs give hardware and ticketing experience. Military communications and IT roles give network, radio and equipment work under rules. Electricians, HVAC technicians and low-voltage cablers already work on the systems that keep a data center running, and critical facilities technician roles hire from those trades.

Training programs are the other way in. Microsoft's Datacenter Academy works with community colleges and vocational schools near its data centers, with hands-on labs, mentorship and internships that can lead to jobs; training nonprofits such as Per Scholas run data center technician courses. A home lab, a server you built or a switch you configured, is worth a line on your resume too.

## Do data center technicians make good money ?

Data center technician pay is in line with skilled IT support work and rises with shifts and certifications. The US Bureau of Labor Statistics does not count data center technicians on their own; in its closest group, the median annual wage for computer network support specialists was $76,220 in May 2025, and for computer user support specialists $61,860\. Night and weekend shift premiums, overtime and the employer (a cloud company or a colocation operator) move pay up or down, so compare postings near you.

## What to put on your data center technician resume

* Certifications first: CompTIA A+, Network+ or Server+, OSHA 10, any cabling certificate; a certificate in progress with its exam date.
* A skills block in posting words: rack and stack, server hardware replacement, structured cabling, fiber, ticketing, power and cooling checks.
* Bullet points that name the equipment and the task, from any job where you did hands-on work.
* A line that says you can work nights, weekends and rotating shifts, if you can.
* One page, no photo, no references, saved as First\_Last\_Resume.pdf.

## Frequently asked questions

### How long does it take to become a data center technician?

It depends on where you start. Someone already in IT support or a trade may need only a certificate such as CompTIA A+ or Server+ and a resume aimed at the role; someone new to IT usually needs a certificate plus a stretch of hands-on work with hardware first.

### What qualifications do you need to be a data center technician?

Most postings ask for hardware and networking skills, often shown by CompTIA A+, Network+ or Server+, plus hands-on experience. Degrees vary: the BLS says network support specialists typically need an associate's degree, and many technicians come from help desk, military or trade backgrounds.

### Is it hard to get a data center technician job?

It is harder with no hands-on hardware work, because postings ask for it. A certificate plus any work with servers, cabling or electrical systems, described clearly on a one-page resume, makes it much easier.

### Do data center technicians make good money?

Yes, for skilled IT support work. The BLS does not track data center technicians separately; its closest group, computer network support specialists, had a median annual wage of $76,220 in May 2025, and shift premiums can add to it.

### Can you become a data center technician with no experience?

Yes. Earn CompTIA A+, then get hands-on time through help desk, computer repair, military IT, a trade or a training program such as Microsoft's Datacenter Academy, and lead your resume with certifications and hardware skills.

### Do I need a degree to be a data center technician?

Not always. Requirements vary by employer: some ask for an associate's or bachelor's degree, others accept certifications and hands-on experience. Read each posting and lead your resume with what it asks for.
