Position Summary
The Medical Doctor Specialist (Physician) is responsible for ensuring clinical readiness, emergency preparedness, participant safety, and medical oversight for clinical trials. The role involves assessing trial risks, overseeing emergency response systems, verifying study readiness, and ensuring compliance with Good Clinical Practice (GCP) standards.
Key Responsibilities
Clinical & Emergency Preparedness
Ensure approved procedures for emergency assessment, resuscitation, stabilization, and hospital transfer are in place and operational.
Ensure referral hospitals, ambulance services, out-of-hours medical support, and escalation arrangements are current and accessible.
Verify that minimum standards for clinical monitoring, medical coverage, and emergency preparedness are maintained.
Review and approve emergency trolley configuration, dosing bed suitability, alarm systems, and emergency access arrangements.
Lead emergency simulation exercises and ensure findings, lessons learned, and corrective actions are documented.
Review clinical readiness deficiencies, assign corrective actions, and escalate unresolved risks to the Head of Facility.
Clinical Trial Risk Assessment
Review each trial’s risk assessment to determine whether the facility’s clinical and emergency capabilities are adequate.
Define additional monitoring, rescue treatment, specialist support, staffing, medical coverage, and emergency arrangements required before trial activation.
Ensure referral pathways, transfer procedures, emergency equipment, and clinical coverage are appropriate for the study protocol and investigational product risks.
Verify completion of all required mitigation measures before recommending trial activation and participant dosing.
Reassess trial readiness whenever protocols, safety information, participant populations, or risk profiles change.
Study Oversight
Ensure the Principal Investigator (PI) assigns appropriately qualified personnel for:
Medical history and participant eligibility review.
Clinical assessment and participant monitoring.
Dosing-day and post-dose medical coverage.
Participant-specific safety reviews.
Application of protocol stopping or escalation criteria.
Protocol-specific emergency, referral, and participant transfer responsibilities.
Required Skills
Strong knowledge of resuscitation, stabilization, referral, and hospital transfer procedures.
Competence in clinical trial risk assessment and participant safety oversight.
Ability to evaluate protocol, investigational product, and participant-specific risks.
Advanced clinical judgment and emergency response capability.
Ability to determine appropriate monitoring, staffing, medical coverage, and emergency arrangements.
Competence in evaluating emergency equipment, clinical monitoring systems, and facility readiness.
Experience leading emergency simulation exercises and implementing corrective actions.
Strong knowledge of Good Clinical Practice (GCP), delegation procedures, and Principal Investigator oversight.
Ability to assess staff qualifications, competency, and training.
Strong leadership, decision-making, multidisciplinary coordination, and problem-solving skills.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
High attention to detail, integrity, accountability, and commitment to participant safety.
Ability to work effectively in a multicultural team environment.
Qualifications
Applicants must possess:
Medical Doctor Specialist (Physician) qualification.
Current professional registration.
Current Good Clinical Practice (GCP) certification.
Recognized Advanced Life Support (ALS) certification or an approved equivalent.
Experience
Applicants should have:
Relevant clinical trial experience.
Recent emergency management experience.
