Quick answer
An application letter for a security guard job names the post, then shows you are trustworthy, trained and available: your security training or registration, where you have guarded before, and that you can work night shifts. Keep it short, one page, and attach your CV, ID copy and any clearance the employer asks for.

Dear Sir or Madam,
RE: APPLICATION FOR THE POST OF SECURITY GUARD
I wish to apply for the post of security guard advertised on 2 March 2026. I have four years of experience guarding commercial premises and I completed a basic security guard course in 2021.
At my current site, a shopping centre, I control the main gate, search vehicles, keep the occurrence book and patrol the car park at night. I have worked day and night rosters without absence and I know how to respond to alarms and incidents.
I have attached my CV, a copy of my national registration card and my training certificate. I am available for an interview and can start at short notice.
Yours faithfully,
Peter Mwansa

Dear Sir or Madam,
RE: APPLICATION FOR THE POST OF SECURITY GUARD
I am applying for the post of security guard you advertised this week. I completed secondary school in 2024 and I am ready to train and to work night shifts.
At school I was a prefect in charge of the main gate during visiting days, and I now help run our village's community watch. I am disciplined, physically fit and I keep accurate records.
I have attached my CV, ID copy and two references. Thank you for considering my application.
Yours faithfully,
Brian Otieno
| Country | What to know (as of 2026) |
|---|---|
| Kenya | Private security officers must be registered by the Private Security Regulatory Authority under the Private Security Regulation Act 2016. Mention your registration or Guard Force Number if you have one. |
| Zimbabwe | Security companies need police clearance and vetted guards, so expect to enclose a police clearance with your letter. |
| Elsewhere | Many employers ask for a police clearance or certificate of good conduct. If the advert asks for one, list it in your enclosures. |
Name the post in the first sentence, then show your training, where you have guarded and that you can work shifts. Keep it to one page, sign it, and list the documents you attached, such as your ID copy and certificates.
Show trust and discipline instead: responsibilities you held at school, community watch or volunteering, your fitness, and that you are ready to train and work night shifts. Attach references who can speak for your honesty.
Usually your CV, a copy of your national ID, any training certificate, and a police clearance or certificate of good conduct if the advert asks for one. In Kenya, include your PSRA registration if you have it.
Our security guard CV guide covers the format, the skills to list and how to show your experience. Your letter and CV should tell the same story.
