CV for a Supermarket Job With No Experience: Example and Guide
No work history yet? Here is what a supermarket CV should say instead, the skills cashiers and shelf packers are hired for, and a full example you can follow.

Short answer: a CV for a supermarket job with no experience leads with a short profile that names the role you want (cashier, shelf packer, merchandiser or customer assistant), then shows the things supermarkets hire for: being reliable, honest with money, quick on your feet and polite with customers. Fill the experience section with school, volunteering, a family business, church or community work and any informal selling you have done. Keep it to one page, add two referees who can vouch for your character, and send it as a PDF.
This guide shows what to put on a supermarket CV with no experience, section by section, with a full example at the end. If you have worked a till before, our retail and cashier CV guide is the better starting point.
What supermarkets look for in a CV with no experience
Supermarkets hire people with no experience all the time, because the work is taught on the job in a few days. What the manager cannot teach is character, so that is what your CV has to prove:
- Reliability: you turn up on time for early, late and weekend shifts.
- Honesty: you will handle cash, stock and customers' change.
- Physical energy: shelf packing, trolleys and deliveries mean hours on your feet and lifting.
- Customer manners: you greet people, answer questions and stay calm in a queue.
- Basic numeracy: counting change, checking stock counts and reading price labels.
Every section of your CV should give evidence for at least one of these.
What to put on a supermarket CV with no experience
Contact details
Your full name, a phone number with the country code, an email address that is just your name, and the town or suburb you live in. Supermarkets prefer people who live close by, because they are more likely to make early shifts, so your location helps you here.
A profile that names the job
Two or three lines. Say the role, say you are available for shifts, and give two true strengths.
School leaver looking for a cashier or shelf packer position at a supermarket in Nakuru. Reliable, good with numbers and used to serving customers from helping in my family's kiosk. Available for early, late and weekend shifts.

Experience, when you have no job history
Use the heading Experience rather than Work Experience, and list anything where you were trusted with people, money or stock:
- Helping in a family shop, kiosk, stall or farm (counting stock, serving customers, handling cash).
- Selling anything: airtime, second-hand clothes, food at events.
- Volunteering at church, a mosque, a school event, a sports club or a community clean-up.
- A school role: prefect, class treasurer, tuck-shop helper.
- Holiday work, even unpaid, in a shop or warehouse.
Write each one as a short bullet with a verb and a result, for example "Served customers and counted the day's cash at my aunt's shop every Saturday for two years, with no shortages."
Education
Your highest school level, the school and the year. If you passed mathematics, say so: a cashier role rewards it. Add any short course, such as a computer packages certificate or a customer service workshop.
Skills
Pick six to eight that you can back up: cash handling, counting stock, customer service, teamwork, time keeping, lifting and carrying, basic computer use, languages you speak. Our list of skills to put on a CV has more, but do not pad it.
Referees
A supermarket with no work history to check will ring your referees, so give two: a teacher, a pastor or imam, a coach, or the owner of the shop you helped in. Ask them first. The format is in our guide to references on a CV.

Questions people ask about supermarket CVs
How do I write a CV for a supermarket job if I have never worked?
Write a profile that names the role, then fill the experience section with family business, volunteering and school roles, and prove reliability and honesty in every line. Employers expect no job history for this role; they are checking character and availability.
What do supermarkets ask for besides a CV?
Often an ID copy, your school certificate and, for cashier roles, a police clearance (in Kenya the certificate of good conduct, in South Africa a police clearance certificate). Some ask for a short application letter: our application letter guide covers it.
Should I apply in person or online?
Both. Large chains advertise online and on their own careers pages, but many branch managers still take printed CVs at the customer service desk. Keep a PDF on your phone and three printed copies in a clean folder.
Is a cashier CV different from a shelf packer CV?
Only in emphasis. A cashier CV stresses accuracy with money and a calm manner with customers; a shelf packer or merchandiser CV stresses fitness, speed and tidiness. The structure is the same, so tailor the profile and the first two skills.
Make it in your phone browser
You do not need a laptop. Our builder works on any phone, suggests duties for first jobs, and lets you preview the whole CV free before you download it. Pick a clean design from the CV templates (no photo needed for a supermarket job in most countries), and check it with the free ATS CV checker before you send it.
That is a CV for a supermarket job with no experience: a profile that names the role, honest evidence of reliability, one page, two referees, and a PDF the manager can open on a phone.
Frequently Asked Questions
What should I put on a CV for a supermarket job with no experience?
A profile naming the role, your contact details and town, an experience section built from family business, volunteering and school roles, your education, six to eight real skills, and two referees who can vouch for your character.
Can I get a supermarket job with no experience?
Yes. Supermarkets train cashiers, shelf packers and customer assistants on the job and hire mainly for reliability, honesty and manners, which your CV has to show.
How long should a supermarket CV be?
One page. With no work history you have no reason to go longer, and a tidy single page looks more confident than a padded second one.
Do I need a photo on a supermarket CV?
Not in most countries. Leave it off unless the advert asks for one; a clean layout and a clear profile matter more.
What skills do supermarkets look for?
Cash handling, counting stock, customer service, teamwork, time keeping, lifting and carrying, basic computer use and the languages your customers speak.
Who can be my referee if I have never worked?
A teacher, a religious leader, a coach, a community organiser or the owner of a shop you helped in. Ask them before you list them.
