CV for a Care Assistant With No Experience: UK Guide and Example
UK care employers recruit on values, train the rest and run a DBS check. How to write a care assistant CV with no experience, with an example.

Short answer: a CV for a care assistant with no experience in the UK should show the values care employers recruit for (patience, kindness, respect for dignity, reliability and honesty), the care you have already given unpaid, such as looking after a relative or volunteering, your right to work, your availability for shifts, and that you are willing to complete the Care Certificate and a DBS check. Care homes and home care agencies train new staff; what they cannot train is character, so your CV has to show it in every line.
This guide is for people in the UK (or applying for UK care roles from abroad) who have never held a paid care job. It covers what to write, what to leave out, and ends with an example care assistant CV.
What UK care employers look for in a CV with no experience
Most care providers in England recruit on values and train the skills. Social care in England uses the Care Certificate, a set of standards new care workers are expected to complete during their induction, so employers expect to teach moving and handling, infection control and record keeping. On a CV with no experience they are reading for:
- Values: compassion, patience, respect, dignity, and the ability to stay calm.
- Unpaid care: looking after a parent, grandparent, child with additional needs, or a neighbour.
- People work: any job or volunteering where you served, listened to or supported people.
- Practical checks: right to work in the UK, an enhanced DBS check (you apply once offered), a driving licence for home care rounds, and whether you can do earlies, lates, nights and weekends.
- Communication: clear spoken and written English for handovers and care notes.
How to write a care assistant CV with no experience
Profile: values first, then availability
Patient and reliable person seeking a care assistant role in a residential home in Leeds. Cared for my grandmother at home for two years, including personal care, medication reminders and hospital appointments. Willing to complete the Care Certificate and an enhanced DBS check. Available for days, nights and weekends.
Keep it to three or four lines. If you are a student nurse, a healthcare course student or changing career, say so in the first line.
Experience: the care you have already given
Use the heading Relevant experience and include unpaid care. It is real experience and UK employers treat it as such:
- Caring for a family member: personal care, meals, mobility, medication reminders, appointments, companionship.
- Volunteering: a hospice, a befriending scheme, a day centre, a community kitchen, a church visiting group.
- Work with people: retail, hospitality, childcare, teaching assistant work, customer service.
Write what you did, not what you felt: "Supported my grandmother with washing, dressing and meals every morning for two years, and kept a daily note of her medication for the district nurse."
Skills and knowledge
Personal care, moving and handling (if you have done it), food preparation, listening and reassurance, record keeping, time management, working alone and in a team, basic first aid if you hold a certificate, and any languages. If you have completed free online courses in safeguarding, dementia awareness or infection control, list them under training with the provider and the year.
Education and training
GCSEs (name English and maths), any health and social care qualification such as a Level 2 or Level 3 Diploma, a first aid certificate, and the Care Certificate if a previous employer issued it. No care qualification is required to start; many employers prefer to train you.
The practical lines employers look for
Put these in a short block near the top or in the profile: right to work in the UK (or your visa status), driving licence and access to a car (for home care), availability, and "Enhanced DBS check: willing to apply" or the date of your existing check.
References
Care providers must take up references before you start, so give two now: a previous employer, a volunteer coordinator, a tutor, or a GP or social worker who saw you care for a relative. Our guide to references on a CV shows the layout.

Questions about care assistant CVs
Can I become a care assistant with no experience?
Yes. Many UK care homes and home care agencies recruit on values and train new staff through the Care Certificate, so no experience is a common starting point. Your CV needs to show the values and any unpaid care you have given.
Does caring for a family member count as experience?
Yes. Write it in the experience section with dates and the tasks you did: personal care, meals, mobility, medication reminders, appointments. UK employers treat unpaid care as relevant experience.
Do I need a DBS check before I apply?
No. The employer applies for an enhanced DBS check once they offer you the job, usually through their own process. Saying "willing to apply" on your CV is enough.
Should I put my visa or right to work on my CV?
Yes, one line near the top. Care employers must check it, and stating it saves a question. If you need sponsorship, say so clearly: not every provider holds a sponsor licence.
Is a healthcare assistant CV the same as a care assistant CV?
Nearly. A healthcare assistant (HCA) works in the NHS or a clinic under nurses, so stress clinical observations, hygiene and ward routine; a care assistant works in a care home or in people's homes, so stress personal care, dignity and daily living. The structure and the values are the same.
Build it in a clean design
UK care employers read CVs on screens and through recruitment software, so use a single-column design with no photo from our CV templates, keep it to two pages at most, and run it through the free ATS CV checker. If you are also applying for nursing roles, see how to write a nurse CV.
That is a CV for a care assistant with no experience: the values, the unpaid care you have given, the practical lines employers need, and two referees ready to speak for you.
Frequently Asked Questions
What should I put on a care assistant CV with no experience?
A values-led profile, the unpaid care you have given (family or volunteering) as experience, people-facing jobs, any training such as first aid or dementia awareness, your right to work, availability and DBS status, and two referees.
What are the values care employers look for?
Compassion, patience, respect for dignity, reliability, honesty and the ability to stay calm. Show each one with something you have actually done rather than listing the words.
What is the Care Certificate?
A set of standards that new care workers in England are expected to complete during induction with their employer. You do not need it to apply; saying you are willing to complete it helps.
Do I need qualifications to be a care assistant in the UK?
No formal qualification is required to start. GCSE English and maths help, and a Level 2 or Level 3 health and social care diploma is a plus, but most employers train you.
How long should a care assistant CV be?
One page with no experience, two at most. Put the profile, the practical lines and your unpaid care in the top half of the first page.
