Short answer: a CV for a general worker in South Africa is one clear page: your name, ID status, contact details and area at the top; a two-line profile that says you are fit, reliable and available; your schooling written honestly (matric, Grade 11, or "attended to Grade 12"); any work, piece jobs, learnerships or EPWP programmes you have done; skills such as lifting, cleaning, machine operation or a driver's licence; and two references. If you did not pass matric, you can still get a general worker post: many adverts ask for Grade 10 or Grade 12 and some ask only for ABET or the ability to read and write, so write what you have and never claim a certificate you do not hold.
This guide shows the format South African employers expect for a general worker CV, what to put with no experience, how to handle a failed matric, and ends with a full example.
What a general worker CV in South Africa needs
General worker posts are advertised by municipalities, mines, factories, farms, construction companies, retailers (as packers and merchandisers) and cleaning contractors. The person shortlisting reads for the requirements in the advert, so your CV must show them in the first half of the page:
- The education the advert asks for: often Grade 10 or Grade 12, sometimes ABET or "able to read and write". Write exactly what you have.
- Fitness and reliability: physical work, shifts, early starts.
- Relevant work, even informal: piece jobs, EPWP or CWP programmes, learnerships, farm or construction work, cleaning.
- Extras that move you up the pile: a driver's licence (and the code), a forklift licence, first aid, a safety induction, a trade test.
- Where you live: municipalities and mines often give preference to local residents, so put your area and ward where relevant.
- Documents on request: a certified ID copy, certificates and sometimes a Z83 for government posts. Our South Africa CV format guide explains the Z83.

- Personal details: full name, contact number, email if you have one, area and town. Your ID number is not required on the CV; employers ask for it on the application form or a certified copy. Many people leave it off to avoid identity theft.
- Profile: two or three lines. "Physically fit and reliable general worker with two years of piece work in construction and cleaning. Grade 11. Code 10 licence. Available immediately for shifts in the Sekhukhune area."
- Work experience: newest first, with dates. Include piece jobs, seasonal farm work, EPWP, CWP, learnerships and internships.
- Education: the highest grade completed, the school and the year. Then any certificates.
- Skills: six to eight real ones.
- References: two, with phone numbers.
One page is enough. Use plain headings and no tables, so the HR system and the person can both read it; our simple CV format shows the layout.
How do I write a CV if I failed matric?
Write the grade you completed and the year, honestly, and move on to your work and skills. Employers can check with the Department of Basic Education, and a false matric claim is grounds for dismissal later. There are three honest ways to show your schooling:
- If you completed Grade 11: "Grade 11, Mokopane Secondary School, 2022."
- If you sat matric and did not pass: "Attended to Grade 12, Mokopane Secondary School, 2023 (National Senior Certificate not obtained)." Some people write only "Grade 12 (attended)"; never write "Matric" on its own if you did not pass.
- If you passed some subjects: you can list them: "Grade 12, 2023: passed English, Life Orientation, Business Studies."
Then strengthen the rest of the CV: a driver's licence, a learnership, an EPWP programme, a safety course, and references who can confirm you work hard. If you want to improve your matric later, the Department of Basic Education's Second Chance Matric Programme lets adults rewrite subjects, and you can add "Currently rewriting matric subjects" if that is true.
What to put with no experience
If you have never been employed, use the heading Experience and include:
- Piece jobs and casual work: gardening, car washing, construction site helping, loading, market work.
- Farm work in season, even for family.
- Community work: cleaning at a church, helping at a crèche, a sports club, a stokvel event.
- Learnerships, skills programmes or a school holiday job.
Write what you did: "Loaded and unloaded bricks and cement for a building contractor in Marapong, three days a week for six months." A reference from that contractor is worth more than any sentence about being hard-working.

Questions about general worker CVs
What qualifications do I need to be a general worker?
It depends on the advert: many municipal and mining general worker posts ask for Grade 10 or Grade 12, some ask only for ABET Level 3 or the ability to read and write, and a few need a driver's licence or a safety induction. Read the advert and show the requirement in your profile.
Should I include my ID number on my CV?
You do not have to. Give it on the application form or as a certified copy when the employer asks, which protects you from identity theft. Our South Africa CV guide covers this and the Z83 for government jobs.
How do I apply for a general worker job at a municipality or mine?
Follow the advert exactly: most want a CV, a certified ID copy, certified certificates and, for government, a completed Z83 form, handed in or emailed by the closing date. Keep a PDF of your CV on your phone and certified copies ready; our phone CV guide shows how to send it.
Do I need a cover letter for a general worker post?
A short application letter helps when the advert says "letter of application" or when you hand your CV in. Our free application letter guide has a template for general workers.
