Why Am I Not Getting Interviews? 9 Reasons Your CV Is Not Shortlisted
Applying for jobs you are qualified for and hearing nothing? Here are the nine reasons CVs are not shortlisted, in the order to check them, with the fix for each.

Short answer: "Why am I not getting interviews for jobs I am qualified for?" has nine usual answers, and the first four have nothing to do with how your CV looks: you are applying to too many jobs with one CV, the advert's exact words are missing from your CV, the top third does not show your strongest match, or you are applying late or through the wrong route. The other five are the CV itself: screening software cannot read it, it is too long or too thin, it lists duties instead of results, it has errors or an unprofessional email, or the file you send is wrong. Work through them in that order; most people find the problem in the first three.
This guide is for anyone whose CV is not getting shortlisted, whether you are applying in London, Lagos, Nairobi or Johannesburg. Each reason has a quick test and a fix, and the 20-minute check at the end tells you which one is yours.
Why your CV is not getting shortlisted: 9 reasons, in order
1. You are sending one CV to every job
Recruiters shortlist against the advert, so a general CV loses to one that answers it. Test: if you sent the same file to your last ten applications, this is reason one. Fix: keep a master CV and spend 15 minutes per application changing the profile, the first three bullets and the skills order to match the advert. Our guide shows how to tailor a CV to a job description.
2. The advert's words are not on your CV
Both software and people scan for the job title and the required skills, in the advert's own words. "Client support" does not match "customer service"; "MS Excel" does not match "spreadsheets". Test: highlight the five requirements in the advert and search your CV for each phrase. Fix: use the advert's wording wherever it is true for you, in the profile, the skills and the bullets.
3. The top third does not show your strongest match
Most CVs are judged in the first ten seconds, on the profile and the first job. If your best evidence for this job is on page two, it is invisible. Fix: write a three-line profile that names the role and your two strongest matches, and make the first bullet of your current job the one that proves them. Our guide to the CV personal profile has examples.
4. You are applying late, or through the wrong door
Popular adverts are often shortlisted within days of posting, and some are filled from referrals before the closing date. Fix: apply within 48 hours of an advert appearing, apply on the employer's own site where you can, and tell your network what you are looking for; a referral puts your CV at the top of the pile.
5. Screening software cannot read your CV
Many employers use an applicant tracking system (ATS) to store and search CVs. Two columns, text in headers, tables, icons and skill bars can scramble what it reads. Test: run your CV through our free ATS CV checker. Fix: one column, standard headings, dates in one format, a text-based PDF. Full detail in why CVs get rejected by ATS.
6. It is too long, or too thin
A four-page CV for a junior role says you cannot prioritise; a half-page CV for a manager says you have little to show. Fix: one page under about five years of experience, two pages for most others, with the last ten to fifteen years in detail. Our guide to how long a CV should be has the rules by career stage.
7. It lists duties, not results
"Responsible for sales" tells a recruiter what your job description said. "Grew the Nairobi territory from 40 to 65 accounts in 18 months" tells them what you did. Fix: rewrite each bullet as verb, task, result, with a number where you know one and no number where you do not. Our list of action verbs for a CV helps, and so does an honest look at common CV mistakes.
8. Errors, an unprofessional email, or a missing phone code
One spelling mistake can end an application for a role that involves writing, and an email address like partyboy99 does the same for any role. A phone number without a country code is unreachable from abroad. Fix: read the CV aloud, ask one careful person to proofread it, use a name-only email, and write your number as +254 7xx xxx xxx.
9. The file is wrong
A Word file that opens with broken formatting, a photo of a printed CV, a file called "CV final final.docx", or a 12 MB scan all cost you. Fix: send a text-based PDF under 1 MB named Firstname_Lastname_CV.pdf, unless the advert asks for Word. Our guide explains when to send PDF or Word.
The 20-minute check
- Pick the last advert you applied to. Highlight its five requirements. Search your CV for each phrase. (Reasons 1 and 2.)
- Cover everything below the first job. Does what is left name the role and your two strongest matches? (Reason 3.)
- Check the advert's posting date against the day you applied. (Reason 4.)
- Run the free ATS check and read every flag. (Reasons 5, 6 and 9.)
- Count bullets that start with "responsible for" or "duties included". More than two is reason 7.
- Read the CV aloud once. (Reason 8.)

Questions people ask when they are not shortlisted
Why am I not getting interviews for jobs I am qualified for?
Because qualification is the entry ticket, not the shortlist. The employer has several qualified applicants and shortlists the ones whose CV matches the advert most visibly, arrived early, and reads cleanly. Reasons 1 to 4 above are the usual answer for qualified people.
How many applications should it take to get an interview?
There is no reliable number; it varies by field, level and city. A better signal is the ratio: if you have sent more than 20 tailored applications for roles you clearly meet and had no interview, something in the nine reasons is wrong, and the 20-minute check will find it.
Is my CV being rejected by AI?
Usually not in the way people fear. Most screening software stores, searches and ranks CVs by keywords and filters set by a recruiter; a person still reads the shortlist. Some employers now add AI summaries. Either way the fix is the same: a readable file with the advert's words in it.
Should I follow up after applying?
Yes, once, about a week after the closing date or ten days after applying: a short, polite email or call asking whether shortlisting has happened and whether they need anything more. It also catches applications that never arrived.
Does a cover letter help me get shortlisted?
When the advert asks for one, yes, and a missing letter can disqualify you. When it does not, a short one still helps where the fit needs explaining, such as a career change or a relocation. Our free cover letter generator drafts it from your CV.
Rebuild the top third today
Upload your current CV, paste the advert into the AI CV Agent, and let it rewrite the profile and the first bullets around the employer's words from your own facts. Then choose a single-column design from the CV templates and run the finished PDF through the ATS check.
So, why am I not getting interviews? One of nine reasons, most of them fixable in an evening, and the first three are where qualified people usually find the answer.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why am I not getting interviews?
Usually one of nine reasons: one CV for every job, the advert’s words missing, a weak top third, applying late or through the wrong route, a CV that screening software cannot read, the wrong length, duties instead of results, errors or an unprofessional email, or the wrong file. Check them in that order.
Why is my CV not getting shortlisted even though I am qualified?
Because every shortlisted applicant is qualified. The shortlist goes to CVs that visibly match the advert, arrive early and read cleanly. Tailor the profile and first bullets to each advert and apply within 48 hours.
How do I know if my CV is ATS friendly?
Run it through a free ATS CV checker. It flags layouts, headings, dates and files that screening software reads badly, and most fixes take minutes: one column, standard headings, a text-based PDF.
How many jobs should I apply for before I get an interview?
There is no reliable number. If you have sent more than 20 tailored applications for roles you meet and had no interview, work through the nine reasons; the problem is usually in the first three.
Should I follow up if I have not heard back?
Yes, once, about a week after the closing date: a short email asking whether shortlisting has taken place and whether they need anything more from you.
