CV for Over 50s: How to Write a CV That Gets Interviews After 50

Thirty years of work will not fit on two pages, and it should not try. How to write a CV after 50 that shows what you offer now, with an example.

CV for over 50s: the CV Chap Chap AI CV Agent trimming a long career to the last fifteen years beside a clean two-page CV

Short answer: a CV for over 50s works when it shows what you offer now rather than everything you have ever done. Keep it to two pages, give full detail for the last ten to fifteen years and a single line for each earlier job, leave off your date of birth, your graduation years and any job before about 2010 unless it matters, write a profile aimed at the role you want next, and put recent training, current tools and a few results with numbers near the top. Age discrimination in hiring is unlawful in the UK under the Equality Act 2010 and in many other countries, but the CV still has to make a recruiter picture you in the job, not add up your years.

This guide covers what to cut, what to keep, how to show you are current, the format that reads best on a screen, and ends with an example CV for a job search after 50.

What to leave off a CV after 50

  • Your date of birth and age. Not needed in the UK, the US, Canada, Australia or most of Europe. Where a country expects it, follow the local format.
  • Graduation years for degrees and school. List the qualification and the institution; the year adds nothing.
  • Jobs older than about fifteen years, unless one is directly relevant. Fold them into a line: "Earlier roles: sales and branch management, Barclays and Nationwide, 1995 to 2009."
  • Outdated skills and tools: fax, shorthand, software no longer in use. They date the CV more than any year does.
  • Phrases that signal age: "over 30 years of experience", "seasoned", "veteran". Say "fifteen years leading finance teams" or simply what you did.
  • A full address. Town and postcode area are enough.

What to keep and move up

  • A profile aimed at the next job, three lines, with the two or three strengths that role needs and one recent result.
  • Recent training and current tools: a course from the last two years, the systems you use daily (Teams, Xero, Salesforce, Power BI, whatever your field uses). Put them in a short block under the profile.
  • Results with numbers from the last ten years: revenue, savings, team size, projects delivered, retention.
  • Stability and judgement, shown through what you did: steadied a team through a merger, mentored new hires, ran the audit nobody else wanted.
  • A LinkedIn link with an up-to-date profile and a recent photo there (not on the CV in the UK). Our guide shows how to add LinkedIn to your CV.

How far back should a CV go after 50?

Ten to fifteen years in detail, and one line for everything before. Recruiters read the first page for fit and the second for depth; a third page of 1990s roles is skipped and quietly counts against you. If an older role is the one that matches the advert, pull it forward as a short "Relevant earlier experience" entry rather than listing everything in between.

Which CV format is best for over 50s?

A reverse-chronological CV with a strong top third: profile, key skills and current tools, then experience. Avoid skills-based CVs that hide dates; recruiters assume there is something to hide, and screening software reads them badly (see why CVs fail ATS checks). Use a clean, modern single-column design, a readable font at 10 to 11 points, and plenty of white space; our guide to the best font for a CV has the options. Two pages is right for most people over 50; how long a CV should be explains the exceptions.

Questions people over 50 ask about CVs

Should I put my age or date of birth on my CV?

No, in the UK and most English-speaking countries. Employers cannot ask for it before an offer in the UK except for specific legal reasons, and it only invites bias. Leave off graduation years too.

How do I show I am up to date with technology?

Name the tools you use every day in a short block under your profile, add a course from the last two years, and write bullets that mention the systems: "ran the migration to Xero", "built the team's Power BI dashboard". Evidence beats claiming to be a quick learner.

Is a two-page CV too long after 50?

No. Two pages is the norm for an experienced professional in the UK. What hurts is a third page of old jobs, not a full second page of recent results.

Should I apply for jobs below my last level?

If you want to, and the CV should then be aimed at that level: a profile that says why the role suits you now, results that fit its scope, and no language that suggests you will be bored. Employers reject "overqualified" CVs when they fear the person will leave, so say why you will stay.

Where can over 50s get job search help in the UK?

Jobcentre Plus has 50PLUS champions in many offices, and charities such as Age UK and membership sites such as Rest Less publish advice and job listings for older workers. Your industry body may run mentoring or returner schemes as well.

Build the trimmed version in minutes

Upload your old CV to the CV uploader, delete the roles before 2010 into one line, rewrite the profile for the job you want, pick a modern design from the CV templates and check the page count in the preview. If you are also changing field, the career change CV guide covers the profile and skills order.

That is a CV for over 50s: two pages, the last fifteen years in detail, current tools up top, results with numbers, and nothing on the page that counts your years for the reader.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I write a CV when I am over 50?

Keep it to two pages, detail the last ten to fifteen years, fold older jobs into one line, leave off your date of birth and graduation years, write a profile aimed at the next role, and put recent training, current tools and results with numbers near the top.

How far back should a CV go for over 50s?

Ten to fifteen years in detail. Summarise everything earlier in a single line unless an older role matches the advert, in which case add it as a short relevant earlier experience entry.

Should I put my date of birth on my CV over 50?

No. It is not needed in the UK, the US, Canada, Australia or most of Europe, and it only invites bias. Leave off graduation years as well.

What CV format is best for older workers?

Reverse-chronological with a strong top third: profile, key skills and current tools, then experience. Avoid skills-based layouts that hide dates.

Is age discrimination in hiring illegal in the UK?

Yes. Age is a protected characteristic under the Equality Act 2010, so employers cannot lawfully reject you because of your age. A CV that shows what you offer now still helps you get past unconscious bias.
